How Walmart's 4‑5‑4 Fiscal Calendar Works

Find out how Walmart weeks, 4-5-4 periods, quarters, and 53-week years fit together and how to compare reporting dates.

Walmart U.S. comparable sales use a 4-5-4 retail calendar. Weeks run Saturday through Friday, periods contain four or five complete weeks, and a standard quarter contains 13 weeks. Those periods can cross calendar-month boundaries.

Find exact dates in the Walmart fiscal calendar, which maps Walmart weeks, periods, and quarter boundaries across FY2025–FY2028.

What is Walmart's 4-5-4 fiscal calendar?

It is a retail reporting calendar that groups complete Saturday-through-Friday weeks into a repeating four-week, five-week, four-week pattern.

The pattern repeats once per quarter

Each standard quarter contains three retail periods. The first has four weeks, the second has five, and the third has four. Together, they make a 13-week quarter.

Most years contain 52 weeks

Four standard quarters create a 52-week reporting year. Occasionally, the calendar needs a 53rd week to keep the retail-week pattern aligned with the calendar; FY2025 was one of those years.

How Walmart weeks run

For the comparable-sales calendar, a Walmart week runs from Saturday through Friday. The week stays intact even when it crosses from one calendar month into the next.

When you report weekly from daily retailer data, a calendar-month filter can split a Walmart week. The resulting total will cover different dates from the retailer period your team expects.

How periods and quarters fit together

FY2027 week 1 runs January 31–February 6, 2026. Filtering only February 1–6 would omit the Saturday at the start of that week.

In a synthetic example with $100 of sales each day, the complete seven-day week totals $700. The six-day February slice totals $600. The apparent $100 shortfall is entirely due to the filter; it is not evidence of weaker demand. Check exact dates before investigating an operational cause.

Walmart’s financial fiscal year ends January 31. Its comparable-sales retail calendar groups complete weeks, so its start and end dates can straddle that financial boundary. “FY2027” alone is not a sufficient date filter.

The 4-5-4 sequence describes the number of weeks in each retail period, not the number of weeks in every calendar month.

Each standard quarter contains 13 weeks, and four quarters contain 52 weeks. Each period begins and ends on a retailer week boundary, keeping complete weeks together in period comparisons.

Why 53-week years need special treatment

A 52-week year contains 364 days, so it gradually drifts against the 365- or 366-day calendar. Retail calendars occasionally add a 53rd week to restore alignment. Walmart’s FY2025 comparable-sales calendar included that extra week in the fourth quarter.

A 14-week quarter needs adjustment before you compare it with a standard 13-week quarter. Before interpreting a year-over-year change, confirm whether the retailer measure already accounts for the extra week and whether both date ranges cover the same number of retail weeks.

How tax-free holidays split across weeks

A Friday–Sunday sales tax holiday puts one eligible day in one Walmart week and two in the next. Even a holiday with the same calendar dates each year can cover a different mix of reporting weeks. Use the 2026 tax-free weekend tracker to compare each state’s dates, eligible categories, and holiday days per Walmart week with 2025.

How supplier teams should use the calendar

Keep the retail calendar and the data definition together. For each weekly or period-level view, record:

  • the exact start and end dates;
  • the Walmart week and retail period;
  • the current and comparison periods;
  • the measure definition, units, and filters; and
  • the source system and latest available refresh.

Those details prevent a period label such as “P2” or “Q4” from hiding a mismatched date range, a partial week, or a 53-week-year adjustment.
