Compare tax-free holidays
by Walmart Week.

A holiday is one possible explanation for a sales change. Check price, promotions, availability, and store mix before attributing the result to tax relief.

01

Count the eligible days in each week.

Walmart Weeks run Saturday–Friday. A Friday–Sunday holiday puts one day in the first week and two in the next. The state guides show this split for both years.

02

Match the eligible assortment.

Ohio’s 2026 holiday covers fewer days and categories than its 2025 event. An item that qualified last year may no longer qualify, even when you align the dates.

03

Look at the weeks around the event.

Compare daily sales through the holiday and the surrounding weeks. Purchases brought forward or delayed can make a weekly increase look larger than the change across the full period.

Planning your comparison

Tax-free weekend FAQs.

When is tax-free weekend in 2026?

Dates vary by state and holiday. Many school and clothing holidays fall in July or August, while energy, emergency preparation, and outdoor holidays run at other times. Some last longer than a weekend. Use thestate date table for each 2026 window and its 2025 comparison.

Which dates should I use to analyze Walmart tax-free weekend sales?

Start with the store’s state and the eligible product category. Then use the state guide to check price limits and local-tax rules. Walmart Weeks run Saturday–Friday, so a Friday–Sunday holiday splits across two weeks. Compare the holiday days in each week for both years.

Are all school supplies, clothes, and computers tax-free?

No. Each state sets its eligible categories, exclusions, and price limits. “Under $100” excludes an item priced at $100; “$100 or less” includes it. Some limits apply per item, others per purchase, and some exemptions cover only the first part of a price. Thestate rules explain those differences.

Does tax-free weekend apply to online shopping?

Online purchases can qualify, depending on the state’s order, payment, and delivery rules. For example, Connecticut addresses purchases paid for during its holiday even when delivery happens later. Check thestate’s online-order guidancebefore applying an exemption.

Why can the Walmart Week comparison differ from the calendar dates?

A holiday can keep the same calendar dates and still span different Walmart Weeks. Missouri’s April 19–25 energy holiday falls entirely in WK 12 in 2025, but its final Saturday falls in WK 13 in 2026. The state guides show the number of holiday days in every affected week. Use theWalmart fiscal calendar for the full-year view.

Sources & method

Compiled by TrueShelf. State guidance takes precedence when reference tables disagree. Each state guide links to its eligibility rules and the source for last year’s dates.

Dates are calendar dates for each jurisdiction. Start and end times, online-order rules, and local tax participation follow the state guidance. “Under $100” excludes a $100 item; “$100 or less” includes it. Examples here are a planning summary, not a complete list of exempt products.

Walmart Week numbers use the same published reporting calendars as our Walmart calendar. August 2026 falls in FY2027; August 2025 falls in FY2026. The comparison matches the corresponding holiday, rather than subtracting 365 days.

Online orders, bundles, and rain checks

Order dates and delivery dates are not interchangeable. Connecticut, for example, uses payment during the holiday to determine eligibility even if delivery follows later. Its rules also prohibit splitting a normally bundled item to bring its price below the cap. A rain check used after the holiday does not extend the exemption. Read Connecticut’s examples; apply the rules for the state where the purchase is taxed.
